The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will promote the safety and appeal of travel in Korea to the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The ministry on Jan. 17 said its Minister Yu In Chon from Jan. 18-19 will attend this year's ASEAN Tourism Forum and the ASEAN Plus Three (Korea, China and Japan) Tourism Ministers Meeting in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The forum is a conference attended by tourism ministers from ASEAN countries and ministers, vice ministers and delegates from tourism organizations from leading neighboring states such as Korea, Japan, China, Russia and India.

At the ministers' talks, Minister Yu will explain Korea's tourism policy to to his ASEAN counterparts and stress his government's efforts to ensure safe and convenient travel for foreign tourists.

He will also discuss how to raise Korea's role and contributions to boost connectivity with ASEAN.

Korea and ASEAN last year launched a comprehensive strategic partnership to commemorate the 35th anniversary of bilateral dialogue relations.

Minister Yu will also discuss tourism cooperation methods in bilateral summits with his counterparts from Indonesia, Cambodia and Malaysia.

With this year marking the 65th anniversary of relations with Malaysia, the ministry will conclude a bilateral memorandum of understanding in tourism cooperation on tourism cooperation.

Other plans are a Korean booth run jointly with the Korea Tourism Organization in April at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents Fair and hosting in June of a K-Tourism Roadshow in Kuala Lumpur.

Minister Yu said, "As seven of ASEAN's 10 member states are also part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, we will expand cooperation with ASEAN in culture and tourism through several opportunities this year."
