Jan. 27, the day before the Seollal (Lunar New Year) holidays begin, will be a temporary public holiday.

The Ministry of Personnel Management on Jan. 14 said the Cabinet approved the designation.

Thus the Seollal period will be extended to six days from the weekend of Jan. 25-26 all the way to Jan. 30.

The extra day off aims to give the public a longer break during the holiday and stimulate domestic consumption to aid economic recovery.

After approval of the designation, the ministry immediately initiated follow-up measures including the release of a notice on the measure.

To minimize inconvenience to the public caused by the designation, relevant ministries will be asked to prepare advance measures on operating public offices for civil affairs and daycare facilities.
