Jeju Island seeks to launch a "workcation" (working vacation) visa to attract digital nomads to the nation's leading tourist island.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on Nov. 14 said it launched research on its adoption of a "Jeju-style" digital nomad visa to allow such workers to enter the island for workcation.
The term "digital nomad" refers to one who works either at home or remotely through digital devices such as smartphones and laptops.
Jeju plans to attract digital talent worldwide who can work freely without spatial limits.
Kim In-young, director-general of the island government's Jeju Economic Vitality Bureau, said, "Workcation, a new lifestyle in the digital era, will drive Jeju's growth."
Since 2002, the island has run a visa-free system under the Special Act on the Establishment of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Development of a Free International City, which allows foreign nationals to stay up to a month without a visa. People from countries that support terrorism do not qualify for the exemption.
